Motorcycle Riding Skills Books

Allan Kirk has been working in the motorcycle safety/rider training field for over 30 years. In that time he has gained an encyclopaedic knowledge of the subject and has written many internationally-acclaimed motorcycle riding skills books.

A few of the titles are listed below.

Paper books
US$20 each

Braking - The Motorcyclist's No 1 Survival Skills.
This book contains an in-depth look at the most difficult of all motorcycle riding skills - high level brake use. Internationally praised, it is probably the most comprehnsive book ever written about the most essential survive skill of motorcycling.

How To Get Off Speeding Tickets.
A light but telling look at Police operational procedures and equipment in speed law enforcement and the loopholes that may mean the difference between paying the Government a large amount of fine money or spending that money on more worthwhile things like fallen women, wine, and song...

Cornering - Going Around The Bend On A Motorcycle.
Safe, quick cornering requires considerable riding skills knowledge, the understanding and application of some quite complex cornering rules, a cool head, sharp eyesight, trained reflexes, a well-maintained motorcycle, and an ever alert and working brain.
This book will help you gain the mental skills needed to corner well. The physical skills will come with practice.

Mental Control - Motorcycling's Hidden Skill
The experts say that over 90% of motorcycle riding skills are mental skills. Mental Control is both a skill and a frame of mind that separates the professional motorcyclist from the amateur. This book is aimed at helping the average motorcyclist gain Mental Control skills.

Ride Like An Expert - The Basis Of Professional Riding.
This popular book is a book covering the core motorcycle riding skills. As such, the book will be found useful by both the newcomer to riding and the experienced rider who wishes to brush up on his skills.

Crashes and Crises - Learning From Other's Mistakes
An often hilarious book containing riders' descriptions of motorcycle crashes they have had. The intent of the book is to provide the reader with an idea of the things that can go wrong while riding and to pre-plan appropriate strategies to counter these problems.

The Megarider Crash Survival System deluxe
When it comes to the crunch and there seems to be no way to avoid a crash, all is not lost. At worst, using the Megarider Crash Survival System you can reduce the crunch to a survivable impact while, at the best, you can avoid the crash altogether.
The Megarider Crash Survival System has been developed over the past decade based on the New Zealand Motorcycle Safety Consultants' experience in practical riding tuition, examination of local and international crash statistics, and the study of hundreds of motorcycle crash reports.
(Available in a New Zeaand, US, or Euro version)

You Are As Good A Rider As You Think - The Psychology and Attitudes of the Megarider
Ninety percent of motorcycle riding skills are mental and it's the riders with the best mental skills who constantly out-ride other riders.
The book "You're As Good A Rider As You Think - The Psychology and Attitudes of The Megarider" looks at the deeper aspects of how the megarider uses his brain on a motorcycle.
It covers things like the psychological control of other road users, the use of Transactional Transfers to instantly change your style of riding for the better, and how you must do an about-face in attitude to achieve true control over other road users. This book is quite unique and is the result of 30 years of in-depth rider training study and a hundred or so years of combined riding experience in the NZMSC team.
We recommend this book to you. It will open up areas of riding skills you've never even thought about.

The Megarider's Guide To Motorcycle Tyres
Tyres are not just simple round rings of rubber.
They are a remarkably complex product and have a huge impact on the performance of a motorcycle.
This book looks at all aspects of tyres - their history, how they are made, how they actually work, the different types there are, how to intepret tyre markings, how retread motorcycle tyres are made, how to choose tyres for your bike, special factors such as aquaplaning, plus there is a whole range of additional information about tyres that the experienced rider must know to ensure his bike is shod with the best rubber for his bike and his riding style.
To the best of our knowledge this is the only book that looks at this subject in detail from the motorcyclist's view point.
It's a must for any megarider.

Street Chess - The Survival Game
Ask any experienced rider and he or she will tell you that to survive out on the roads you have to know all the moves.
You have to be able to read a situation way in advance and have your reactions to that and any possible situations that may arise from the approaching situation all lined up and ready to go.
Sounds like a chess game, doesn't it?
Indeed, sometimes staying safe on a motorcycle is just like a chess game and this book looks at motorcycle riding from that novel perspective.
Yet again, from the Megarider Organisation comes a riding skills book that will make you think about your riding in a new way, learning more and improving your survival skills in the process.

Riding To The Vanishing Point
It started off as the system the Police in England use for fast safe cornering.
Now, after international development, Riding To The Vanishing Point has become a riding system that automatically enables you to adjust your speed for any situation where your vision is blocked or where you encounter what may be a hazardous surface.
The Riding To The Vanishing Point system employs a simple technique as its basis, a technique able to be implemented by any rider, novice or experienced. The the system is intuitive and adapts for such a wide range of situations that you will find that the system applies to most of your riding.
Riding To The Vanishing Point allows you to ride roads you've never been on before at speeds that are likely to severely embarrass most of the locals; all the while doing it in perfect safety. What more could you want?

The Megarider Guide To Riding Pillion
Motorcycles carrying pillions are over-represented in motorcycle crashes. Part of the problem is that too many pillions do not know what to do when riding on the back, yet their untrained actions can cause the bike to go out of control.
Riders tell us ruefully of pillions who refuse to hold on unless you are damn near popping a wheelie. Then, everytime you open the throttle a little, there is a massive grab at your midsection and their weight shifts waaay back.
Some pillions also won't look over the rider's shoulder because that's too close to hugging. So, instead, you get to be head-butted umpteen million times.
Most new pillions also try and stay perpendicular to the road. There's nothing more exciting than having somebody try to straighten up when you're lining up for a corner or trying to hold a line in a corner.
And on and on rider's go with horror stories of what bad pillions have done to them.
This book is an attempt to redress that problem. It tells the prospective or practicing pillion rider in detail what to do and what not to do when on the back, and how they can make the rider so much better and safer for everyone.
If you ride on the back of a motorcycle at all regularly, you NEED to read this book.

Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Riding
Zen Riding, it's called amongst experienced riders.
It's where things seem to act mystically when you are riding, where your actions are made without conscious thought, where the rider seems to be immersed in and part of everything in the roading environment.
There is, of course, a logical explanation for it, and of course the MegaRider organisation explains it in this book.
But the MegaRider people go one step further in this book. In an intriguing approach to rider training, they use Zen-like stories and sayings to bring a deeper understanding and appreciation of high level riding motorcycle skills to the reader.
As always with MegaRider publications, this book is thought-provoking, educational, and contains information that will, if you make a point of remembering it, probably save your life out there on the roads, sooner or later.
